Eating Oily Fish can add extra years to your life!
According to recent research, eating oily fish can reduce the risk of heart disease and extend your life by up to 2 years.
It was found that older people with high blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids reduce the risk of dying prematurely by a quarter. Omega-3 is known to be the best source of fatty acids, it is found in oily fish such as mackerel, salmon and sardines. White fish also contains omega-3 but at a lower level.
Harvard School of Public Health and the University of Washington conducted a study to monitor the levels of omega-3 fatty acids and the link with death rates. It found that those with higher levels of the fatty acid in their blood stream lived up to 2 years longer on average.
Lead author Dariush Mozaffarian, of Harvard, said “Our findings support the importance of adequate blood omega-3 levels for cardiovascular health, and suggest that later in life these benefits could actually extend the years of remaining life,”
Fatty acids have been linked to improvements in blood lipid levels, a reduced tendency of thrombosis, blood pressure and heart rate improvements, and improved vascular function.Last updated: 05-04-2013
